Motorcycle Security
.
Most countries in the world have high crime rates with vehicles being one of the most active areas for theft. This problem is increasing in volume with most vehicles not being recovered and as such that represents a large loss to both owners and insurance companies.
Vehicles fall into three categories: - Commercial vehicles, domestic and business cars and motorbikes.
Different vehicles have different requirements of protection and detection and this document specifically addresses those applicable to the motorbike problem.
Motorbikes, when stolen, invariably are broken up into spare parts and resold through back street or even storefront outlets.
The requirement is to UNIQUELY identify the original manufacturer's product such that the manufacturer and his representative can identify the product during resale or service operations.
Any item checking out as a stolen part is notified to the owner and or police.
The method of achieving this is by using a IDTAG which is implanted either in the major metal parts of the bike frame or engineered into the engine castings, such that it can be read and identified with a portable reader.
The IDTAG is fitted into the major frame parts of the bike by gluing the tag out of reach in the tubular frames of the bike, reading these tags is achieved with long read heads on flexible arms. The TAG can also be imbedded in the surface of metal castings, in slots provided by the manufacturer or machined in by a distributor.
IDTAG can be subjected to pressure, shock and flexing when applying the tag to frames and chassis.
The major problem with identification of motorbikes is that the process needs policing by a group who have a vested interest in motorbikes financially.
A major group who are interested in promoting identification as a method of fighting crime at a cost level are the Insurance companies.
A typical example of insurance company involvement could be where the company offers a discount on insurance of all motorbikes which are fitted with IDTAG. The insurance companies can use their existing computer databases to log the tag identities and allow a lookup facility for parts which are possibly of dubious origin.
The operation requires that manufacturers, dealers, and insurers, police and users work in unison to reach an effective method for combating theft.
Identifying motorbikes acts as a deterrent to potential thieves.
